How do I explain the Bhagavad Gita to a child?

The Bhagavad Gita is a conversation between Shri Krishna and his friend Arjuna. Arjuna felt confused and sad before a great battle, and Shri Krishna gently taught him how to be brave, do his duty and stay calm. Gita Jayanti celebrates the day this teaching was given. In 2026, it falls on Sunday, 20 December.

The story of the Bhagavad Gita, for kids

Long ago, two groups of cousins, the Pandavas and the Kauravas, could not agree on how to share a kingdom. They tried everything to make peace, but in the end, a great battle was going to happen at a place called Kurukshetra.

Arjuna, the bravest Pandava, rode out in his chariot. His charioteer was his dearest friend, Shri Krishna. But when Arjuna looked across the field, he saw his teachers, his grandfather and his cousins on the other side. His hands shook. He put down his bow and said, "I don't know what is right anymore."

Shri Krishna didn't scold him. He smiled kindly and began to teach him, right there in the chariot. He talked about doing your duty, about staying calm in happy and sad times, about the soul that never dies, and about loving God. When Shri Krishna finished, Arjuna felt clear and strong again.

This conversation of 700 verses, in 18 chapters, is the Bhagavad Gita, "the Song of God."

Source: Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva. Gita Jayanti is observed on Mokshada Ekadashi, in the bright half of the month of Margashirsha.

How to tell it by age

  • Ages 2–5: "Shri Krishna was Arjuna's best friend. When Arjuna felt scared, Krishna helped him feel brave again."
  • Ages 6–8: Tell the chariot story, then share the first lesson: "Do your best, and don't worry."
  • Ages 9–10: Read one Gita verse together each day for a week, and talk about when it could help them, like before a test or a match.

How to celebrate Gita Jayanti at home

  • Read or listen to one chapter together. Chapter 12, on devotion, is only 20 verses and is a gentle start.
  • Make a "Gita lesson" card with one verse and its meaning, and stick it on the fridge for the week.
  • Draw the chariot scene: Arjuna, Shri Krishna, and the white horses.
  • Visit a temple that holds Gita chanting on the day; many do.

Questions parents ask

Is the Bhagavad Gita too hard for children? Not if you start with the story and one lesson at a time. Children understand "do your best and don't worry" long before they can read a full chapter.

Isn't the Gita about war? The setting is a battlefield, but the teaching is about what to do when you're confused, scared or sad. For children, focus on Arjuna's feelings and Shri Krishna's kindness, not the fighting.

How many chapters and verses are in the Gita? 18 chapters and 700 verses. It is part of the Mahabharata.
