Why does Ganesh ji have an elephant head?

Ganesh ji has an elephant head because Shiv ji gave it to him. Parvati Maa made Ganesh ji and asked him to guard her door. When he bravely stopped Shiv ji from coming in, there was a fight. To make things right, Shiv ji brought him back to life with an elephant's head and blessed him to be worshipped first, before every other god.

The story, told gently

One day, Parvati Maa was getting ready for her bath on Mount Kailash. She wanted someone to guard the door. So she took a little turmeric paste, shaped it into a boy, and gave him life with her love. "You are my son," she said. "Please let no one in."

The boy stood at the door, proud and brave. Soon, Shiv ji came home. "You may not go in," said the boy. Shiv ji did not know who this child was, and the boy would not move. Shiv ji's ganas tried to move him, but he would not give way. In the struggle that followed, Shiv ji's trishul struck, and the boy fell.

When Parvati Maa came out, she was heartbroken. Shiv ji understood at once that this was her son. He sent his ganas north and said, "Bring back the head of the first creature you meet." They found a gentle elephant and brought its head back. Shiv ji placed it on the boy and breathed life into him.

The boy opened his eyes and smiled. Shiv ji hugged him and said, "You will be Ganapati, the leader of my ganas. And from today, everyone will worship you first, before they begin anything."

How to tell it by age

  • Ages 2–5: Skip the fight. "Parvati Maa made a little boy, Ganesh ji. Shiv ji gave him a special elephant head, and made him the god everyone prays to first."
  • Ages 6–8: Tell the full story above, and pause on the happy ending: Shiv ji made things right.
  • Ages 9–10: Talk about why Ganesh ji was brave (he kept his promise to his mother) and why Shiv ji was great (he admitted the mistake and fixed it).

What the elephant head teaches

Families often explain Ganesh ji's form like this:

  • Big ears: listen more.
  • Small eyes: look closely and focus.
  • Small mouth: speak less and kindly.
  • Big head: think big and wisely.

Why is Ganesh ji worshipped first?

Because of Shiv ji's blessing, Ganesh ji is honoured before every puja, wedding, new home or new school year. He is Vighnaharta, the remover of obstacles. That is also where the bhajan line "Pratham pranam karo Gauri nand Ganesh" comes from: first, bow to Ganesh ji, the son of Gauri.

Questions parents ask

Is the Ganesha story too scary for small children? It doesn't have to be. For children under five, tell only the happy part: Ganesh ji was given a special elephant head and became the first god we pray to. Save the full story for when they're older.

Why does Ganesh ji have one broken tusk? In a popular telling, Ganesh ji broke off his own tusk to keep writing when his pen broke, while the sage Vyasa told him the Mahabharata.

What is Ganesh ji's vahana? His vahana, the animal he rides, is a mouse, called Mushak. It shows that even the smallest creature can carry something great.
