What prayer can my child say before eating?

The most common Hindu prayer before meals is the bhojan mantra "Brahmarpanam," from the Bhagavad Gita. It reminds us that the food, the cook and the person eating are all part of God, so we eat with thanks. Many families and schools also say "Om Saha Navavatu," a prayer to share food and learning in peace.

Bhojan mantra 1: Brahmarpanam (Bhagavad Gita 4.24)

ब्रह्मार्पणं ब्रह्म हविर्ब्रह्माग्नौ ब्रह्मणा हुतम् । ब्रह्मैव तेन गन्तव्यं ब्रह्मकर्मसमाधिना ॥

brahmārpaṇaṃ brahma havir brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam brahmaiva tena gantavyaṃ brahma-karma-samādhinā

Simple meaning for kids: "The food we offer is God. The one who offers it is God. The fire that cooks it is God. When we see God in everything we do, we come closer to God."

The big idea: everything on our plate came from God's world, through the farmer, the cook and the rain. So before we eat, we stop and say thank you.

Bhojan mantra 2: Om Saha Navavatu

ॐ सह नाववतु । सह नौ भुनक्तु । सह वीर्यं करवावहै । तेजस्वि नावधीतमस्तु मा विद्विषावहै । ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

om saha nāvavatu, saha nau bhunaktu saha vīryaṃ karavāvahai tejasvi nāv adhītam astu, mā vidviṣāvahai om śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ

Simple meaning for kids: "May God protect us together. May we eat together. May we work hard together. May what we learn shine bright. May we never fight. Peace, peace, peace."

Source: Taittiriya Upanishad and Katha Upanishad, where it is a shanti mantra (prayer for peace) said before learning.

Which one should my child learn first?

Mantra Best for Length
Om Saha Navavatu Ages 3–6, family meals, school tiffin time 4 short lines, easy rhythm
Brahmarpanam Ages 6–10, daily home meals 2 longer lines

Many families start with Om Saha Navavatu because its rhythm is easy and it's about eating together, then add Brahmarpanam as children grow.

How to make it a family habit

  1. Say it before the first bite, every meal, even if it's just the evening meal at first.
  2. Sit together. The prayer works best when the family eats at the same time.
  3. Add one thank-you. After the mantra, each person names one person or thing to thank: "Thank you, Mumma, for the dal," or "Thank you to the farmer for the rice."
  4. Keep it short and warm. Fold hands, close eyes, say it slowly. No scolding if it's forgotten; just start again next meal.

Questions parents ask

Why do Hindus pray before eating? Food is seen as a gift, prasad, from God. Praying first turns an everyday meal into a moment of gratitude, and many families believe food eaten with a calm, thankful mind nourishes us better.

Can my child say the prayer in English or Hindi? Yes. If Sanskrit is hard at first, a simple "Thank you, Bhagwan, for this food" is a lovely start. Add the Sanskrit line by line.

Is Om Saha Navavatu a bhojan mantra? It is a shanti mantra from the Upanishads, said before learning. Because it asks that we "eat together," many schools and families use it before meals too.
